about

The reverberant natural environment of these birds is a key component of the unmistakeable sound of two loons in the wild. A captivity narrative unfolds, beginning with the subtle sounds made between mates and their young. The following rapid, continuous undulations between high and low pitch are perceived more as something between a "sound" and a wide vibrato. The incidental two-part harmonies of a pair warbling and howling is created with a loop pedal, the female's more consistent call playing from across the room against the male's more emphatic and erratic tone rendered live. The female sound ceases and the reverberant environment created by electronic reverb is removed, revealing more rough-edged tonal qualities and quickly dispersing sounds. The male's howl is transformed, something in the sound has been taken along with it's habitat. His call escalates, reaches a breaking point, then fades away.
